In just nine days, Amar Dhesi will take his first steps on the mat at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics! Out of Surrey British Columbia, Amar will compete in the 125kg men's freestyle weightclass beginning August 5th.
“Amar Dhesi earned his way to Tokyo 2020 by first winning the 125kg weight class at the national trials in December 2019 and then reaching the final at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in March 2020. Just ahead of the Olympic qualifier, Dhesi also won 125kg silver at the Pan American Championships. As part of his preparations for the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Dhesi won gold at the Matteo Pellicone Tournament in March 2021.” (Team Canada, 2021).
Alongside Amar, three other wrestlers including SFU alumni (and honorary BC-ite) Danielle Lappage, Jordan Steen, and reigning Olympic champ Erica Wiebe will also be lacing up their boots to represent Canada. All will be wrestling on different days, so check in with CBC sports or Olympics.com to tune in, livestream, and ensure you don’t miss the action!
