A World-Class Official: Recognizing Demetra Koutsopodiotis

Athletes are often recognized for their accomplishments on the mat, but behind every wrestling competition is a dedicated team of officials who make it all possible. Their work requires years of training, experience, commitment, and countless hours of service to the sport. We would like to take to recognize Demetra Koutsopodiotis, for representing Canada on the world stage at the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan!

Demetra joined fellow Canadian officials Curtis Leung and Marcia Chiasson at this year's championships, marking another significant milestone in an already remarkable officiating career.

More Than 25 Years of Dedication

Demetra began her officiating journey in 2000, joined the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Officials (CAWO) in 2004, and earned her United World Wrestling (UWW) licence in 2009.

Since then, she has gone on to officiate at some of the biggest competitions in international wrestling, including:

  • Four Pan-American Championships

  • The 2024 Olympic Games, where she was one of only 50 officials selected from around the world

  • Six World Championships

  • Three Commonwealth Games

  • The Youth Olympic Games

Beyond her international experience, Demetra continues to give her time and expertise to wrestling here at home in BC (Kamloops' best kept secret - as stated by Demetra), officiating at countless community competitions, BC Wrestling Association (BCWA), BC School Sports (BCSS), and Wrestling Canada Lutte (WCL) events.

From local tournaments throughout British Columbia to the Olympic Games and World Championships, Demetra's career reflects more than 25 years of dedication to wrestling and the people who make the sport possible.

What Does It Take to Become an International Official?

Reaching the international level of officiating does not happen overnight. Like athletes, officials follow a development pathway that requires ongoing education, practical experience, evaluation, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

In British Columbia, the officiating pathway begins at the BC Aspirant level and progresses through BC Level 3, BC Level 2, and BC Level 1, before advancing to National Recognized Official and further development opportunities.

Progression through these levels involves completing officiating courses, gaining verified experience at competitions, receiving positive evaluations, and demonstrating continued competency.

Each competition provides officials with opportunities to apply their knowledge, develop their decision-making, and gain valuable experience. As officials advance, expectations increase, and opportunities to officiate at higher-level competitions become possible.

It is a significant commitment that often takes years to develop, and one that deserves recognition at every level.

Recognizing the People Behind the Sport

Officials play an essential role in wrestling. They uphold the rules and integrity of competition, support fair and safe matches, and make important decisions under pressure. They also dedicate countless hours to supporting athletes, coaches, clubs, and tournaments across the province and country.

While the spotlight is often on the athletes, wrestling would not be possible without the people who dedicate their time and expertise behind the scenes.

Demetra is an incredible example of what that commitment looks like. Her international accomplishments are something to celebrate, but so is her continued contribution to the wrestling community here in British Columbia.

To Demetra, and to all the officials who give their time to our sport, thank you. Your dedication makes a difference at every level of wrestling.

Congratulations, Demetra! BC Wrestling is incredibly proud of you and grateful for everything you continue to contribute to our sport.
