Over the course of the last week, Canada took the mats by storm at the 2022 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. Seven BC wrestlers competed – exhibiting impressive performances at the world stage. Bringing home some hardware, Karla Godinez Gonzalez (55kg) earned bronze adding to her impressive international performances over the course of the past year - taking gold at the 2022 Pan American Championships and silver at the Grand Prix of Spain.
Providing comment when asked about her performance, as quoted from Wrestling Canada, Karla stated “I think I was fighting with myself a bit. I work really hard but when it comes to competitions, I think I fight with my own thoughts. I want to control every little thing, but I have to just let it go because doing that is how I lost my last match (semifinal). So, I decided to just go for it, and the results happened!”
Adding to the women’s team performances, Justina Di Stasio (76kg) and Ana Godinez Gonzalez (62kg) placed 5th in the world! An achievement that very few can say. Mirroring this on the men’s side, Amar Dhesi took 5th in the 125 kg weight class battling through challenging matches in the repechage. Jasmit Phulka (74kg), Nishan Randhawa (97kg), and Darthe Cappellan (57kg) also faced some tough matches – continuing to stand as role models making BC and Canada proud. Thank you to the coaches who accompanied and supported athletes - including two BC coaches (Raj Virdi and Dave McKay).
Congratulations to all!
