In a stacked field, BC's 2x Olympian, Haislan Garcia put together 4 strong wins to finish second at the final Olympic World Qualifying Tournament in Istanbul, Turkey on May 8.
Garcia kicked the tournament off with a tough 4-2 win over Sodiqkhoja Ismolov of Tajikistan. After jumping off to a 4-2 score at the end of the first round, Garcia held off the charging Ismolov to capture his first win.
In the round of 16, Garcia showed signs of great things to come with a dominating performance over Mykola Bolotnjuk of Slovakia winning by Technical 11-0.
In the quarters, Garcia led 3-2 at the half way mark and despite injuring his left shoulder in the 2nd round, he followed that up with another 3 points to move into the semi-final with a win over D. Habat of Solvenia.
With a ticket to Rio on the line, Garcia showed grit and determination to book his spot for a third Olympic Games with a 2-2 tie over G. Bucur of Romania. Down 0-1 at the half, Garcia fell behind 0-2 after a passivity point was awarded to Bucur in the early seconds of round 2 before securing a high crotch to a 2 point take down at the 4:46 mark.
With an Olympic berth secured, Garcia forfeited the final to Borislav Novachkov of Bulgaria due to his earlier shoulder injury.
Unfortunately, BC's other hopefuls, John Pineda dropped a first round match 5-0 to Vasyl Shuptar of Ukraine while Vancouver's Arjun Gill went out in the quarter finals to Ivan Yankouski of Belarus after racking up wins against Lutfi Shihab Al Zybaidi of Iraq (8-3) and Stefan Recihmuth of Switzerland (1-1) in the first two rounds.
