Your BCWA Board of Directors is taking a proactive approach to building a strong Board for the upcoming year. This coming year will be pivotal for BCWA as we set our five-year strategy and prepare to host the 2023 National Championships.
The Board governs amateur wrestling in BC, and needs a mix of skills, experience and diversity to function well.
This year we are seeking nominations from any persons throughout the province who possess the necessary attributes to thrive on our Board:
Specifically, we want to hear from you, if you possess experience and/or training in:
The 2021/ 2022 BCWA Board will be representative of BCWA’s commitment to diversity and inclusion: BCWA believes in equity, diversity and inclusion are essential for our organization and our members we serve. We believe that everyone - no matter their gender, racialized identity, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religion, political beliefs, family status, socioeconomic status, citizenship status, or Indigenous status – should have equitable access to jobs and opportunities. We strive to ensure the nominations process unfolds in a fair, transparent, timely and open manner to include individuals previously underrepresented or discouraged from participating.
If you have ever thought about joining the board or have questions, we will be hosting an information session on Zoom on May 6th at 6pm. You can register at the following link: REGISTER HERE
If you have any other questions in the interim, please feel free to the President, Chris Thom email@example.com or Non Ha firstname.lastname@example.org
A huge congratulations to all the coaches and programs we have heard from so far that have been approved for their Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) funding. At first count, there will be over $100,000 in funding going to programs all around the province.
With the changes that have been made to CSJ, the funding is allowed to be used in the fall to help promote the sport ahead of the wrestling season. BC Wrestling is going to be making a big push to grow grassroots wrestling and get more kids on the mat than ever before. We will be helping programs to get into schools to deliver PE Classes starting in September and introduce kids to the sport.
If you have any questions or would like to see wrestling programs delivered at your school, please reach out to the chair of the Grassroots Committee email@example.com
BC Wrestling is very excited to announce that we have won the bid to host the 2023 U17/U19 Canadian Wrestling Championships. It has been a number of years since BC has hosted and our goal is to put on an incredible event that brings us back into the regular rotation. The event will be hosted downtown in the iconic sails of the Vancouver Convention Centre. Athletes, Coaches and Officials from all across Canada will come together in one of the most scenic venues that helped put Vancouver on the map at Expo '86. Steps away from the venue is our Host Hotel, the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront. With the hotel and venue beside each other and with the city's intermodal transportation, we expect that nobody who flies into YVR will need to have a car.
A big thank you to the Hosting Committee which consisted of Justin Abdou, Raj Virdi, Miguel De Sousa, Samantha Fan, Non Ha and Chris Thom. We also want to thank Sport Hosting Vancouver and Michelle Collens who made the whole bid possible.
We are just less than two years away from the tournament, but we are already starting to plan so we can ensure success. There is no way that we will be able to succeed without the help of our wrestling community. So, if you want to help, please reach out to Raj Virdi at firstname.lastname@example.org and let him know how. We are going to need an army of volunteers so don't be shy. Whether it is volunteering at the event, helping with setup, procurement, transporting mats or anything else let Raj know.
In addition to volunteers, an event of this magnitude will require financial support. Before we start actively approaching sponsors, we want to extend the opportunity to our membership who may want to contribute to the success of the event. Whether it is financial support or in-kind donations, we want to hear from you! Please reach out to Chris Thom at email@example.com if you are interested.
There will be many challenges for our sport to overcome between now and March 2023, but we are excited to take those on and then deliver the best National Championships that Canada has ever seen.
